This is the reprint of a well-known and valuable work that has been out of print and widely sought for a number of years. A volume in the series Source Books in the History of the Sciences, it consists of selections from the writings of the great physicists from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century―such figures as Galileo and Newton, Franklin and Faraday, Rowland, Hertz, and the Curies―making available to the student in English translation their most important contributions, described in their own words, together with biographical and explanatory notes by the editor.
I think Magie did a good job selecting some of the most important and inluential experiments in the history of physics (for the time period 1600-1900). For students looking to trace the conceptual development of the discipline, reading primary source material provides a sense of context not attainable in other formats. The excitement that surrounds scientific discovery is palpable as one reads the detail of crucial experiments, despite the fact that we know the results and impact in advance. My only regret is that Magie didn't produce a second volume, to extend his analysis into the early decades of the 20th century. To have a Sourcebook that included the most influential experimental work done in Relativity Theory, Quantum Mechanics, and Cosmology would be very useful.
