I am a reading specialist at the high school level. I have found my students to enjoy reading the books in this collection. They are short books with sentences that are not too long or complex. The subjects seem to be of high interest teenage-type stories. The content is definitely a bit "rough" as you can sense from some of the titles. The subliminal message given though is good prevails over evil. Average reading level around 8 grade. I'd recommend them as part of a classroom collection.I'll admit that I'm not very familiar with the book series except that I know it's rich in "drama" and features characters in the teenage range. I have found that girls and some boys really enjoy the series. To me, when a reluctant reader requests a book, I FIND that book; this time I bought the set because our library only has one ore two of them. A nice ripple effect occurred when I bought this set: one student after another started reading them, students that typically say, "Books are dumb; they're boring." For the simple fact that these books keep students engaged and coming back for more, I'd highly recommend it for the teenage reader.My daughter was assigned to read one of the Bluford series books by her 8th grade ELA teacher. She enjoyed the assigned book so much, I decided to surprise her with the 15-book boxed set. When we opened the Amazon box with great anticipation (we always get such great things c/o Amazon), she shouted with glee and promptly ran up to her bedroom to add the series to her library (She thanked me properly much later). That weekend she began reading other books in the series without prompting and hails this as the 'best surprise gift ever'. Clearly a great choice for teens...go Mom!As part of a mentoring program at a public school, I can tell you these books are the best! Our middle school librarian raves about them and has a hard time keeping them in the library. Not only that, but my mentee (a teenaged girl who hated reading at the beginning of our year together) checks these books out and READS them! I can't tell you how this new-found love for reading has changed her! Buy the series! You won't regret it.These books have been wonderful for my 8th grade classroom. My students love them. They like it. It is a good transition series for teens to young adults.I'm a mentor and these are great for my teenagers. They love the series and even though they are in schools most of my girls have read a few but not all and they get very excited to see the whole series.
